US Presidential Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stressed the importance of maintaining the current status quo in Jerusalem while respecting the holy sites in Jerusalem.
She said in a press statement last night in response to the storming of the right-wing Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, into the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Mosque, “Any unilateral step for change that jeopardizes the current situation is an unacceptable step.”
For his part, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a press statement that the United States is “extremely concerned” after Ben Gvir’s move.
Price considered that the storming “could lead to exacerbation of tensions and spark violence.”
Price indicated that Washington held “direct talks today with representatives of the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office regarding this matter.”
“It is an unacceptable step,” he said.
